The Minnesota Vikings waltzed into the 2025 season with unusually skinny cornerback depth, utilizing veteran Jeff Okudah after the two main starters, Byron Murphy Jr. and Isaiah Rodgers. But that’s not the case in 2026 after the club drafted Chuck Demmings in Round 5 and signed veteran corner James Pierre.

Pierre Has a Clear Path to Minnesota’s Nickel Defense

Unless something drastically changes before the start of the regular season – – it probably won’t – – Pierre is in town to serve as the third cornerback behind Murphy Jr. and Rodgers. He spent six seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers, drafted in 2020, which means he had the same longevity with that franchise that safety Josh Metellus and center Blake Brandel have with the Vikings.

Pierre was quietly excellent in Pittsburgh last season. Across 408 snaps, he earned an 86.2 overall Pro Football Focus grade and an 88.9 coverage mark, while quarterbacks completed just 42.9% of their throws at him and posted a miserable 41.4 passer rating. He allowed only 130 yards on 35 targets with no touchdowns and one interception.

The one wart was tackling, where his 45.9 grade stands out. In Minnesota, Pierre profiles as the CB3 in Flores’s scheme: a long, physical outside corner who can handle isolated matchups, let Murphy Jr. move around, and give the defense more flexibility in nickel packages. He’ll play on the outside when the Vikings move Murphy Jr. into the slot.

The working theory goes like this: if Mike Tomlin trusted Pierre in Pittsburgh for six years, he will cook with Flores in Minnesota.

What Success Looks Like

Anything close to Pierre’s production in Pittsburgh last year will be simply fantastic for the Vikings. An 86.2 PFF grade and 41.4 passer rating allowed is music to fans’ ears, and in fact, would’ve been the best respective defensive metrics on the Vikings’ entire roster last year.

Therefore, Minnesota merely needs Pierre to do it again. He may not replicate such high PFF grades again – – that’s not easy – – but something in the ballpark of last year’s numbers will be just what the doctor ordered as Minnesota’s CB3.

So long as Pierre stays healthy, his presence on the field between 500 and 750 defensive plays will do the trick.

What Could Make This Ranking Look Too Low – – or Too High

Pierre will be too high on the VikesNow countdown if he regresses compared to his 2025 production or if the aforementioned Demmings, a hungry and scrappy rookie, takes his spot. Fans would not be mad about the Demmings scenario. Pierre must prove in 2026 that his outstanding PFF grade last year was not an outlier or fool’s gold from a limited sample.

How about too low? Well, if Murphy Jr. or Rodgers get hurt – – both played all 17 games last year – – and one misses time due to injury, Pierre would likely be the next man up. So, for instance, if Pierre found himself in full-time starter’s duty, like CB1 or CB2, and he transplanted his 2025 performance to the Vikings in 2026, he would be a savior. It’s part of the reason Minnesota signed him: to hedge the bet against injury.
