The One Problem with the Vikings’ New ‘Rivalries’ Uniform

The Minnesota Vikings-Detroit Lions feud is the most lopsided active rivalry in the NFL with at least 100 regular season meetings. So when the Vikings unveiled “rivalry” uniforms on Tuesday for a matchup in 2026, that was fine and dandy – – but it’s not much of a rivalry.

The Vikings have an 82–45–2 (.636) all-time record over the Lions, so using the term “rivalry” is a bit generous.

The Rivalry, by the Numbers

Minnesota has big-brothered Detroit; there’s no debating it. Here’s a look at the Vikings’ domination over the Lions in the context of NFL, NBA, MLB, and NHL:

  1. Predators-Blue Jackets | 67.6% NSH | 105 Games
  2. Celtics-Nets | 66.4% BOS | 223 Games
  3. Celtics-Pistons | 64.1% BOS | 401 Games
  4. Lakers-Clippers | 64.0% LAL | 247 Games
  5. Vikings-Lions | 63.6% MIN | 129 Games
  6. Celtics-Wizards | 63.5% BOS | 329 Games
  7. Lakers-Kings | 63.1% LAL | 458 Games
  8. Steelers-Bengals | 63.1% PIT | 111 Games
  9. Lakers-Rockets | 62.6% LAL | 243 Games
  10. Trail Blazers-Kings | 62.0% POR | 237 Games

The Vikings and Lions have been paired continuously since the Vikings entered the NFL in 1961 – – first in the Western Conference, and then in the same division beginning in 1967, guaranteeing two meetings almost every season and creating generations of overlapping personnel and fan grudges.

Yet, Minnesota has controlled enormous stretches of the series, particularly during the Bud Grant era and again through much of the 1990s and 2000s. That makes the series a story of Minnesota’s conquest.

Detroit’s recent resurgence has added tension, but six decades of history still lean overwhelmingly toward Minnesota. Even Lions faithful will acknowledge it. It’s not a controversial take.

The New Uniforms

Eight teams debuted “Rivalry” uniforms this week, and all NFC North teams took part. The NFL’s Vice President of Marketing Taryn Hutt said of the new threads this week, “Revealing eight new Rivalries uniforms marks the next chapter in a program that is beloved by fans across the NFL and Nike.”

“By spotlighting the launch of the AFC South and NFC North clubs, and the passionate communities behind them, we continue to capture the spirit and tradition of football’s greatest divisional rivalries.”

Nike and the NFL chose Vikings-Lions for Minnesota’s Dec. 20 home debut, while Detroit will unveil its own Rivalries look against Minnesota on Nov. 1. The league wants the uniforms tied to divisional hostility and showdowns that just mean more.

Vikings-Lions certainly checks the familiarity box, but historically, the competitive balance hasn’t been a thing. In other words, the uniforms celebrate the rivalry Minnesota and Detroit are becoming rather than the one they have always been. Recent seasons finally make the marketing feel more believable.

For example, a 10-year-old Lions fan likely considers Vikings-Lions a true rivalry. A 50-year-old laughs at the idea.

Detroit’s 2026 Downturn

Detroit’s recent rise makes the timing even more intriguing. After bursting onto the national scene in 2023, continuing the momentum with a 15-2 record in 2024 while winning the NFC North, the Lions finished the 2025 season at 9-8 and missed the playoffs.

While Detroit still boasts formidable offensive talent, questions loom for 2026 regarding the offensive line and secondary, compounded by several key defenders still recovering from injuries.

The team isn’t rebuilding, but the aura of upstart invincibility has disappeared. If Minnesota strengthens while Detroit settles for mediocrity, the series could quickly revert to its historical pattern in 2026. A return to normalcy, one might call it.

Lions Hold the Win-Loss Advantage as of Late

Despite Minnesota’s historical authority over Detroit, the Lions have earned the right to call the matchup a rivalry lately.

From December 2022 to January 2025, the Lions monopolized the Vikings, winning five consecutive games and even securing the NFC’s No. 1 seed in the 2024 season finale – – the game that Sam Darnold collapsed. Minnesota finally turned the tide in 2025, sweeping Detroit with a 27-24 victory at Ford Field and a 23-10 win on Christmas Day.

The recent matchups have been far more competitive than their all-time record suggests. Detroit holds a 5-3 edge over Minnesota since 2022. In that regard, the “rivalry” aspect rings true.

It’s just that if you look at 65 years of history, the rivalry isn’t very competitive.

VikesNow Verdict: Detroit has finally made this matchup feel like a rivalry, but 65 years of history tell another story. Minnesota has won nearly two-thirds of the meetings. The new uniforms celebrate a feud that has only recently become competitive.
